    Star in the Sky is a poignant and thought-provoking play inspired by the Telugu story *Aakasam lo Oka Nakshatram* by Dr. M. Suguna Rao, reflecting on the life and tragic death of Rohith Vemula. The narrative explores themes of pain, identity, discrimination, assertion, death, grief, and memory, while offering a nuanced portrayal of the Dalit experience in an unjust society. With elements of magic realism, the play brings to life the resistance, myth, and metanarratives that shape the lives of marginalized individuals, particularly Dalits.

    Why did Vamsi write the play?

    He wrote this play to challenge the dominant Savarna perspective that often shapes narratives about caste. In many forms of art, our stories are told from a place of pity, rather than empowerment. The marginalized are rarely seen; their bodies are erased, and their voices silenced. Through Star in the Sky, he wanted to reclaim that space, to make himself—and those like him—visible. This is not just Rohith Vemula’s story; it is the story of every marginalized student in India’s educational institutions.
