Some stories demand to be read quietly, some demand to be read out loud and some, demand to be performed! Saadat Hasan Manto is one of the writers whose stories demand to be performed.
"Literature. Alive." brings to you two stories of Saadat Hasan Manto, performed by Kafeel Jafri.
About "Literature. Alive":
"Words written in a book are corpses of those words which are spoken or sung." Says a character, in the novel "Broken April", written by Albanian writer Ismail Kadere. That was the starting point of this initiative. What if we bring back those words to life, through drama and music? Especially those words which cry out loud to the reader, yearning to be performed and read out loud.
What are the emotions or images that are evoked in an audience member's mind when she watches such a text being performed? How different are these emotions and memories from those which are evoked when she reads the same text? Or are they same?
"Literature. Alive." aims to explore such questions and more through theatrical performances and readings of various texts, both poetry and prose, across languages and in collaborations with different artists.
